About ISBER

ISBER is the only international forum that addresses the technical, legal, ethical, and managerial issues relevant to repositories of biological and environmental specimens.

ISBER educational resources and meetings focus on technical issues such as quality assurance and control, regulations, human subject privacy and confidentiality issues, and provide information about sources of equipment and expertise. ISBER assists vendors in recognizing the needs of repositories for the development of new products and services, and provides information about existing repositories and their specimen
collections.

We invite subcomponents of government, academia, the private sector, and manufacturers as well as interested individuals to become active participants in ISBER and to exchange knowledge bases on repository issues. ISBER is an international society, with membership from 32 countries worldwide.

ISBER Vision
ISBER's vision is to be the leading international forum for promoting consistent, high quality standards, ethical principles and innovation in biospecimen banking by uniting the global biobanking community.

ISBER Mission
ISBER creates opportunities for sharing ideas internationally and harmonizing approaches to evolving challenges in biobanking and repository operation. ISBER fosters collaborations, creates education and training opportunities, and provides an international showcase for state-of the art research findings and cutting edge technologies, products and services. Together, these activities promote best practices that cut across the broad range of repositories that ISBER serves.

The goals of the society include:

  • Dissemination of information on repository management issues
  • Education and sharing of information within the society
  • Providing a voice for repositories to influence regulations on shipping, human subjects, etc.
  • Development of best practice guidelines
  • Provision of centralized information resources for existing repositories
  • Bring members together to work on "hot button" topics

ISBER offers networking through listservs, meetings, and working groups. The second version of the society's Best Practice guidelines is available to members. The guidelines
offer practical recommendations on repository management, and consider regulatory compliance as well as the ethical, legal and social issues relevant to repositories. ISBER also offers a self assessment tool to compare their practices to Best
Practices.

ISBER is a Division of the American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP)
