The UK Biobank Ethics and Governance Council (EGC) is an independent advisory body that monitors the conformity of UK Biobank with its Ethics and Governance Framework and, more generally, advises on the interests of research participants and the general public in relation to UK Biobank. This conference marks the EGC's 10-year anniversary and aims to bring together people responsible for the management of biobanks and big population studies and people and organisations concerned with the ethics and governance of such studies (including those that represent the public, participant and patient audience).

The purpose of the conference is to highlight what lessons can be learnt from establishing the EGC and to identify and discuss upcoming challenges in biobank ethics and governance. Sessions will include: governing access; engaging participants; feedback of results; follow-up through health and related records and data sharing. There are also sessions dedicated to hearing about the experience of other cohort studies and to discussing how experiences can be shared in the future, drawing on established and emerging international initiatives.
