ISBER is the only global forum that addresses harmonization of scientific, technical, legal, and ethical issues relevant to repositories of biological and environmental specimens.

ISBER is a global organization which creates opportunities for sharing ideas and innovations in biobanking and harmonizes approaches to evolving challenges for biological and environmental repositories.

ISBER fosters collaboration, creates education and training opportunities, provides an international showcase for state-of-the-art policies, processes, and research findings, and innovative technologies, products, and services. Together, these activities promote best practices that cut across the broad range of repositories that ISBER serves.

The six categories of biobanking that we address are:

  • Environmental Repository
  • Human Specimen Repository
  • Microorganism Culture Collection

  • Educate and share information and tools within the society and with stakeholders
  • Act as the voice for repositories to influence regulations and policy

Key Strategic Directions:

  1. Establish ISBER as an integrated global society
  2. Balance growth and financial sustainability of the society

ISBER educational resources and meetings focus on technical issues such as quality assurance and control, regulation, human subject privacy and confidentiality issues, and provide information about sources of equipment and expertise. ISBER assists vendors in recognizing the needs of repositories for the development of new products and services, and provides information about existing repositories and their specimen collections.

We invite subcomponents of government, academia, the private sector, manufacturers, and interested individuals, to become active participants in ISBER and to exchange knowledge bases on repository issues by becoming members of the association.
